Making A Difference, One Life At A Time

About Us

KC’s CommUNITY Corporation is a Florida-based, family-led non-profit organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs). Our first goal is to open a fitness center specifically for people with IDD's. As we grow, we plan to open multiple businesses and offer a variety of jobs for people with special needs.

Our Vision

We are advocates for the value, inclusion, and acceptance of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. There are limited fitness resources for the special needs community in Volusia County, which we are looking to change. We plan to open a fitness center specifically for people with IDD's. A place where they can get the help and support they need to become healthy and fit. As we reach our fundraising goals, we will open more small businesses for people with IDD's.

Our story is one of love between two sisters that blossomed into a shared family dream.

It all began with the birth of Courtney Widdison who was born with an intellectual disability, and her four-year older sister, Katie Widdison. Since childhood, Katie has always been heavily involved in helping her sister live her best life.
Once Courtney graduated from the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Program in High School, her life came to a standstill. Although she is a high-functioning individual, there were limited options available for her to continue her education and growth. With time, Katie realized that the problem lay within the system.

•    81% of adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) do not have paid jobs.
•    Only 13% of employed adults with an IDD can support themselves without state financial aid and support.

Katie discovered that many companies and businesses are hesitant when it comes to hiring people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Based on this realization, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Instead of asking businesses to hire people with special needs and putting faith in them to treat them fairly and respectfully, she decided to open multiple small businesses of her own, and employee only people with IDDs.

With the support of her family and community, the name “KC” (Katie and Courtney) was coined in honor of the two sisters, and represents a promise made by both of them to help people from the special needs community feel valued and live a more independent life.
